Winter in the mountains is always a special experience. As an alpine photographer, I have become familiar with cold early mornings, working many hours at 3,000 metres. This black and white photograph is of a mighty icon of the Alps, positioned as an alpine meeting point of three countries. It is therefore known by three names, Mont Cervin, Matterhorn and Monte Cervino.
The alps are experiencing changes which were unthinkable 30 years ago in my hiking in the mountains. Unnoticed in the snow, the glacial tracks are disappearing at 25 metres pa. Over the past 2 years, Swiss glaciers have reduced by 10% (SNCAT).
