Tageszeiten. The times of the day in the mountains are represented as a journey from dawn, noon, afternoon and dusk. The Matterhorn is my reference point, positioned between the alpine countries of Switzerland, Italy and France with quotations presenting each moment in time. All four photograph names are linked to the product print details.

“How glorious a greeting the sun gives the mountains!” John Muir

Sunrise. Early morning viewing the North East Face over the Mattertal valley. The alpine iconic peak of 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) is known as the Matterhorn in Switzerland, Monte Cervino in Italy and Mont Cervin in France. For image details click A Golden Summit Matterhorn.

“I learn something every time I go into the mountains” Michael Kennedy

Noon. By midday experienced mountaineers will already be making their descent to the Hornlihut. This image of the East Face taken from the Matterhorn Glacier Trail shows abundant snow in the Spring upper slopes. For image details click The East Face, Matterhorn.

“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks” John Muir

The Afternoon. Taken from below the Rothorn, this image of the Matterhorn was captured in the summer. By July, the snow has virtually disappeared from the alp, apart from the summit and lower glacier slopes. Instead there is the arrival of the afternoon Foehn wind which gathers on the mountain tops. “Mountains are the beginning and end of all natural scenery” John Ruskin

Sunset. Whilst in the morning the colours are gold, pink and blue, the evening bring more muted hues, nonetheless impressive as captured from the Mattertal valley, the evening light falls behind the Matterhorn. By this time of day clouds have gathered swirling around the 4,478 metre summit, as with patience, the icon watchers and photographers await the moment these move aside. The summit emerges again.
